For those wondering what to do in Bali in October, this month brings together the stories, creativity and cultural heritage that make the island so special. As the island moves between old traditions and new expressions, you’ll have a variety of activities to choose from, like engaging in thoughtful conversations at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival or experiencing the living traditions of Taman Ayun.

Culture and Conversations around Bali

Two celebrations this month draw you toward the island’s cultural heart. Taman Ayun Barong Festival (October 16 & 17) honours the Barong, the lion-like guardian spirit who appears in temple ceremonies and dance performances and stands for the protective force of good. In Balinese tradition, his endless struggle with the witch Rangda is a story about balance rather than victory, a reminder that harmony has to be tended again and again. With his place in Balinese culture recognised by UNESCO, the festival celebrates him as both a sacred figure and a living art form – all the craftsmanship, music and movement that bring him to life.

A little over an hour’s drive from us, Ubud turns into a gathering place for storytellers as the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (October 21-25) returns, one of Asia’s best-loved literary events. Authors, poets, thinkers and curious readers arrive from across the world for five days of talks, workshops, performances and long conversations over coffee. This year’s theme is Samarasa, with the words “Awareness. Empathy. Action.” The word speaks to a shared sense of harmony and the idea that people, despite their differences, can meet in a common feeling.

Risata Pizzeria is Grilling Soon!

Now for the news closest to home. On October 15, we’re opening Risata Pizzeria, a new pizza outlet within the hotel.

We’ve spent a lot of time on improving our dough – made with sourdough, fermented slowly so that the crust develops a crispy exterior, a light chew and that gentle tang that only time can give it. They’re then baked in a wood-fired oven, which gives the edges their blistered, smoky character. As far as we know, it’s the first sourdough wood-fired pizza in Kuta, which makes us a little proud and a little nervous in the best way.

We wanted the menu to feel familiar and surprising at once. We have the classics like the Margherita, Pepperoni, Funghi and Quattro Formaggi (though our version is topped with a drizzle of hot honey).
